Food For Thought
Food for Thought has been developed as an educational tool
to assist New Zealand primary school teachers in supporting their
students to make healthier food and lifestyle choices.
Food for Thought is a nutrition education teaching tool, created
to assist the teaching of food and nutrition specifically to Year 5
and 6 students.
Food for Thought is ideal for a school setting as it consists of
a series of topics/modules and is intended for use within one
school term. Although modules follow-on well from each other, they
are stand-alone and can be taught in any order.
With the majority of food purchases made at supermarkets, Food
for Thought provides for a class supermarket visit at a local
PAKn'SAVE, New World, Four Square. This visit can be conducted at
anytime throughout the term - perhaps at the start to grasp
students' attention or at the end, to summarise information
taught.
Food for Thought is unique in that it provides a nutritionist to
implement, coordinate and deliver parts of the programme personally
in each participating school.
With one third of New Zealand children currently overweight or
obese, the need for Food for Thought is particularly relevant
today. Food for Thought was created with the assistance of a
nutritionist, several New Zealand registered teachers and
Foodstuffs' support over an 18 month period from 2005-2006. It is
now being implemented in schools nationwide through the Food for
Thought Trust and the three Foodstuffs Cooperatives.
